Executive Coaching is a one-on-one, personalized leadership development consulting relationship between a coach and an individual executive or manager. Excellent coaching is the artful use of questioning, listening and observation. It requires respect and trust on the part of the coach as well as the client. Trust is communicated because the very act of questioning and listening is a demonstration of respect.
Coaching helps individual leaders use what they’re innately good at. It helps them build on their strengths, develop flexibility and change-readiness, become aware of shortcomings and drives commitment to self-development and achievement.
One-on-one coaching is a helping relationship. It is based on the desire of the coach to assist the client in performing at his or her personal best and the willingness of the client to stretch and grow. A coach plays the role of confidante, sounding board, champion, and mirror. What leader wouldn’t want someone on his side with whom to discuss creative ideas, doubts, petty irritations, and the performance implications of all of those? Great coaches are, to borrow a phrase from the psychologist Alice Miller, “enlightened witnesses” to the peaks and perils of leadership.
When executive coaching is most effective, it elicits solutions from the client. It models listening skills and working with others in a way that empowers others and holds them accountable. It motivates the client to achieve and builds self-reliance rather than dependence.

The mission of The Resilience Project is to provide the tools that help leaders and their teams to thrive during times of change and challenge. Our expertise in managing and leading rapid change and bouncing back from challenge has been translated into multiple books, structured facilitations, instructions for building your own cohort groups to build resilience in your organization, and an assessment tool called the Resilience at Work Questionnaire (the RAW-Q) and its companion book, Lemonade: The Leader’s Guide to Resilience at Work.
The Resilience at Work Assessment is an assessment of fifteen primary attributes that help leaders and managers to excel during times of change and challenge. It provides the data for our Leadership Resilience Profile and Team Resilience Profile reports.
In 2006, our founder Karlin Sloan was launching a book called Smarter, Faster, Better, and asked Dr. Alan Graham to collaborate with her in designing an assessment tool that helped leaders develop their resilience. After years of literature review, original research, thinking, and beta-testing on small groups of consultants, managers, and executives in global organizations, Kevin Cuthbert, MBA joined Alan and Karlin to complete the book “Lemonade, The Leaders Guide to Resilience at Work” as well as the first version of the Resilience at Work Questionnaire that launched at the end of 2011. The RAW-Q has now been delivered to thousands of people and we’ve done two initial studies of the data.
The RAW-Q is now in version 3.0 and is being used in organizations from media to technology to energy to finance.

- Coach specific training from a credible program
- Real-world experience: in business and as an executive coach to senior people
- MA/PhD in human services or related discipline OR served in an executive position in a large organization
- Ability to see coaching in a systems perspective
- Sensitivity to power dynamics as well as issues of diversity in age, gender, race, culture, etc
- References, testimonials, and chemistry
